Searching for Sales!

If you don't needlepoint, you may be tired of scrolling through 6 pages of canvas designs to find the cross stitch sale items.  To narrow your search, visit the Search page and select Advanced Search, then select  Needlepoint as the Category, then go to the bottom of the page and check the box for Sale prices only.  Voila!  This works for any category!

Welcome Rachel!

Please join me in welcoming our newest shipping manager, Rachel.  While her husband is serving his country in Iraq, she's holding down the fort here at home.  She's learning the ropes very fast, but your patience is always appreciated.

Welcome Nancy!

As Rachel prepares for her husband's return from Iraq, we are also working to prepare Nancy to take over.

We never get it done fast enough.  Our fall newsletter is has several special offers.  Here's a summary of what's inside:

Our online thread color converter was reprogrammed to work with our current site, along with the "print your own catalog pages" feature. We had so many people upset when we had to remove the free color converter that we paid a programmer to redo it to work with our new website. The desktop version is still unfinished, but the online version is up and running.  See it at www.discountneedlework.com/convert.asp

The Print your Own Catalog pages feature can be accessed at www.discountneedlework.com/print.asp

Special Needlepoint Offer

We had a customer order 45 preworked needlepoint canvases last month - right before the hurricane struck our supplier in Florida.  Because of hurricane delays the canvases arrived too late for the occasion and the customer declined to purchase them all.  But now we have a lot of extra preworked canvases.  One particular style I had not seen before - maybe because we focus on chair covers.

We received over 30 canvases that are about 12 x 12" and some of them have exquisite petit point designs for a very reasonable price. These will require some petit point work around the center to transition to the background in gros point. Others are great projects for relatives with failing eyesight (or beginners?) since they will require no half stitches, but will be worked all in gros point.

For holiday, we're going to sell designs as a set for a reduced price, just to get our inventory down.  If you're disappointed at not getting these items, keep checking.  As we approach inventory time, we'll be trying to clear out other slow selling items.  See the petit point set, or if you like it simple, see the gros point set.

Gift Ideas

Every year, we make sure to help people think up ideas for holiday gift giving.   Sometimes they need gifts for stitchers, and sometimes they are stitchers looking for ways to make gifts that are personal, yet quick and easy.

Quick and easy gifts to make: decorate a box lid in a weekend.  Use needlepoint, cross stitch or silk ribbon.  Framecraft makes small porcelain boxes at fairly reasonable prices while Sudberry House makes nice wooden boxes.  Always appreciated.

Needlepointers should check out our suede bookmarks with needlepoint insert.  Again, this can be completed in a weekend.  Stitch or hot glue closed.  For a larger project, try the Stitch N Zip eyeglass, coin, or cosmetic bags.  Still able to be completed in less than a week, just stitching nights.

My family likes to exchange ornaments, and I still have cross stitch ornaments done by my best friend in high school.  While any needlecraft can be turned into an ornament, silk ribbon designs are maybe less durable.

Here's a little inexpensive "gifty" for a favorite stitcher: a needle care package.  Lots of us are stingy with needles and then you don't have the size you need when you need it.  Get one package of each type of needle and add one or two types of needle threaders.  Put them all in a decorative box for a double gift.

 It's a crewel world
Our online store is one of the largest suppliers of crewel embroidery kits in the U.S. We sell boxes and boxes of these every month.  We prefer kits from Elsa Williams (mostly crewel) and Candamar (mostly embroidery).  We offer a few from Janlynn.  Unfortunately, both Candamar and Janlynn have been discontinuing several of the designs we thought were very good sellers.  But because Hobby Lobby and the big chains aren't buying them, we lose the design.  Still, we have over 30 kit designs to pick from and Elsa Williams introduces about 3-4 new each year.  No stockings yet, though they promised one last year.

Currently, we don't carry open stock crewel wool like you get in the Elsa Williams kits.  However, we do carry a wonderful fine embroidery wool called Medici from DMC.  It is a superfine single ply wool that can be used for detailed embroidery like in the middle ages, for traditional crewel designs, or (in multiple plies) for needlepoint.  We bought all the wool from a store going out of business to experiment with.  We're getting modest response so we're expanding the color selection slowly.  Right now, we're carrying a mix of the small 27 yard skeins (very reasonably priced and good for embroiderers) and the larger 1/5 hank skeins (you need more for needlepoint).

If you want to get into open design crewel work, start by getting a transfer pencil, some fabric (cross stitch linen works wonderfully) and a book of designs, like our Beginners Guide to Crewel Embroidery. .  Buy your wool and get started!
