Crewel Embroidery Kits at discount prices

Crewel embroidery is fascinating needle art. Typically done in thin wool thread on linen or cotton fabric, crewel work provides  texture not seen in silk or cotton embroidery.

Designs range from the traditional to the contemporary.  The most traditional designs resemble the picture on the left, which is known as the Jacobean style.  It features floral and animal motifs, with vines and leaves twining about.   At discountneedlework.com we have a wide range of reasonably priced crewel kits - nothing over $50!

Crewel embroidery  uses a variety of stitches, including satin, chain, long-and-short, french knot and vine stitch.   The extra thickness of the wool means the projects go faster, too!   For links to other sites about crewelwork, including free patterns, see our Points of Interest at the right.    Crewel was very popular in the 1960's and has been making a comeback, as evidenced by the increasing selection of kits.

Purists will want to transfer their designs to linen twill and work with one of the wool threads available:  DMC Medici (available at discountneedlework.com), or Appleton or Elsa Williams crewel wool.  Specialty threads like metallics, silks and cotton floss can be included in the design as well.  Use a transfer pencil and tissue paper to trace designs from books, then iron on to your fabric.  In addition to our crewel embroidery books, you can find suitable motifs for embroidery in the Dover books.  Find these at Amazon.com  If this sounds complicated, try a kit!

The Lowell Sampler. is a good introductory kit for someone with some experience in needlework.   Crewel kits are a great way to get started in crewelwork!  Join the EGA (links at right) to find self study classes and local guilds to support your art.  The EGA has online classes, which is a real plus.

All our crewel kits come with an outline design stamped onto the fabric, crewel yarn, needle and instructions.  Some kits look like crewel embroidery but are actually worked in cotton floss or other thread.  The manufacturer calls them "Stitchery".  For lack of a better description, we call them crewel.  Read the product summaries to see the variety available.  A few kits may have a stamped background for added color.  We will tell you if this is the case.

You  can find lots of kits and other crewel supplies, like needles, frames, lamps, books, and more, all at discount prices, once you launch into our shopping pages.  Just click below to get started!
