Tip 2 - Working with Metallics
from www.discountneedlework.com

Most important:   use a short thread. Most metallics eventually fray or untwist from all the pulling through canvas, especially if you're working it thick/tight. Thread several at one time so you have needles at the ready.  Use a slightly larger needle than you might otherwise, so that the hole is big enough not to "rough up" your metallic thread and it passes smoothly.

Some people make a slip knot behind the needle to keep the needle from sliding along the thread; or they use wax (we don't like this).  If you're using a Rainbow Gallery specialty thread (like Fyre Works or Nordic Gold), visit their web site for handy stitching tips for each of their threads.

We like the new DMC metallic stranded floss in both #5 pearl size and embroidery floss size.  For needlepoint, don't forget the old standby Cloisonne thread.  Great for covering large mesh canvas (like 10-12-13).
